Damage reduced; value added with gas spring from IGS
A customer came to Industrial Gas Springs looking for assistance with their storage doors. They noticed the storage doors on a truck, frequently used as a utility vehicle by municipalities, were opening too quickly and causing damage to the surrounding area. With help from IGS’s highly qualified team, the company was able to enhance the safety and quality of its product.
The problem was singled out to be an issue with the gas springs installed. The gas springs provided opening assistance to the door, but the surplus of force was causing a recoil effect. This recoil, or bouncing, from the kinetic energy, was causing splitting and breaking in the welds on the steel body. Simultaneously, it was cracking the fiberglass where the hinge of the door was mounted.
The solution
Frustrated by this damage, the company came to IGS looking for a solution. The IGS team provided a gas spring with damping capabilities at the end of the stroke. This new gas spring features 40 millimeters of end of stroke damping, allowing for a slow and controlled opening, significantly reducing damage to the door and surrounding area.
Added value
But IGS did not stop there. Because the part was mounted on a truck that encounters outdoor elements - such as rain, snow, wind, etc. - IGS wanted to ensure the product could handle that type of exposure without causing erosion and rust. To provide more value, they used a gas spring that was able to withstand 350 hours of continuous saltwater spray and certified ASTM B117.
Providing a gas spring that contributed more value than the initial request left the client happy and satisfied with their investment.
