Ball Valve (NBV and BV) Adjustment

Ask A Question

The method of releasing gas from a BV valve is similar to the TV valve. However in this case you will need to use a flat rod of diameter less than 2.0 such as a 1.8mm drill bit of a 1.5mm Allen key.

Instructions

Step 1

Upon receipt, fit the gas spring to the application, operate the springs and observe the movement.

Care should be taken on this first compression. The supplied force in the gas springs might be so great that damage could occur to the part to which the gas springs are attached. For example, if the springs are attached to a sheet metal lid closing for the vertical to the horizontal, the force required to operate the springs could cause the lid to bend before the gas springs compress.

Step 2

How to Adjust a Ball Valve

Safely support the load and remove the gas springs. Unscrew the end fitting from the body end (the bigger section). The hole which leads to the internal ball valve can now be seen T-Valve.

If this is a locking gas spring, please ensure it is fully extended before operating the valve.

Step 3

Hold the gas spring with the rod down and insert the flat side of a 1.8mm drill bit, a 1.5mm Allen key or an equivalent tool with a flat end.

Do not use something with a sharp end or you may make a dent in the ball which could lead to a leak.

Ball Valve Adjustment

Step 4

Gently tap the rod to release gas. Each gentle short tap will allow a small of gas to escape. Each time the ball valve is opening you will hear the sound of escaping gas (it is best to carry out this procedure in a quiet environment).

Please note that the force required to open the valve the first time is always greater than the following hits.

It is possible to press the valve with the palm of your hand, however the hits will be much more repeatable, precise and short if you use a small hammer.

Some gas springs have a very small volume of nitrogen at high pressure. On the smaller size 6 and 8 gas springs, a long hit may reduce the force by up to 20 newtons, which could represent a very high change if the gas springs are charged at low force.

Gas Spring Ball Valve

Step 5

Refit the gas springs to the application. If the force is still too great, repeat the above procedure until satisfied.

If two gas springs are attached remove approximately the same amount of gas from each spring.

If further quantities of springs will be required, return the correctly forced springs to Industrial Gas Springs to have the force measured and balanced (if appropriate).

If, as occasionally happens, you let out too much gas, return the springs to Industrial Gas Springs who will re-gas them.

Please always enclose your name, address, telephone and instructions with any gas spring you send to IGS.
