A locking shroud utilizes a spring-loaded mechanical locking device, to lock the gas spring in its fully extended position. Locking shrouds are used as a safety device, preventing the gas spring from compressing when at full extension.

Where more than one gas spring is required, in a single application, a gas spring with a locking shroud should be used in conjunction with a standard gas spring (with or without a protective shroud), of the same size and force.
